Cultural Studies

West Africa or Western Africa is the westernmost region of the African Continent.  It consists of 16 countries and an area of approximately 5 million square km. The countries in West-Africa are 





Culture 




Despite a wide variety of cultures in West-Africa, there similarities in way they dress, cuisine, music and some cultural beliefs. Particularly Nigeria, Ghana and throughout Senegal. Despite these similarities, West African is an extremely culturally and linguistically diverse place. Nigeria for instance, has 507 languages that are currently spoken in that country alone. People of West Africa also do not share the same religion, cultural tradition, physical surroundings or even standard of living either. The main sport in West-African countries is football also known as soccer in the United States. The type of music in West Africa differs base on the region. For instance in Ghana has many styles of traditional music and modern music due to it multiplicity of ethnic group and its cosmopolitan geographic in West Africa. The popular genre in Ghana is Highlife. In Gambia, their style of music is derive from influences from Latin America in the late 1960's and 1970's as well as other countries from the region such as congolese music. Traditional music of the Fulas, Jolas, Wolofs and other ethnic group all play an intricate role in the unique sound of Gambian music. The popular genre in Gambia is Mande music.
